The veranda

On our road trip last April we were invited to come and stay at the Kurland Hotel in Plettenberg Bay, about 7 hours drive from Cape Town. We were supposed to stay in Nature’s Valley Rest Camp but were unpleasantly surprised by the state of our chalet. I’d planned to do a site inspection at the Kurland Hotel and when I told Peter, the owner, about our disappointment, he generously invited us to some and stay at Kurland for 2 nights.
We were offered 2 adjoining suites close to all the facilities so that it was easy for us to keep an eye on the kids and they could easily play with each other. I was traveling with another single mom and Rosie and her daughter are best friends.
A stay at Kurland Hotel truly is the best gift you can give yourself and your family. The place totally feels like home (eh well, I live in a flat but one can dream right?) and you simply don’t want to leave. Everything is spacious, beautiful and there’s attention to detail. As soon as we had checked-in, freshly picked roses were brought to our rooms. In the evening, while we were at dinner, the fire places in our rooms would be lit so that we could enjoy some reading before bedtime.
For kids this is paradise. With both, a spacious indoors and outdoors play area with plunge pool, big pool and jungle gyms, this must be one of the best kidsfriendly luxury hotels in South Africa. Dinner times were flexible, high chairs, plastic crockery were all available. It was very clear to us that the owners have kids which gives them a very good idea of what guests with kids want. A good thing is also that there’s a separate pool where no kids are allowed. So if you don’t have children, Kurland Hotel is just as well a very nice place to go to.
The location is perfect with a lot of attractions only a few km away. Visit to Birds of Eden, Monkeyland, Knysna Elephant park, are all easy half day trips. Bramon Wines is a stunning place to take your family for lunch and of course the beaches of Plettenberg Bay are worth a visit too. From Plett you can take a spectacular whale safari (June – October) and throughout the year you can book dolphin safaris. Take a little road trip to Tsitsikamma National Park and spend some time on the beautiful beach of Nature’s Valley.

Kurland is the perfect base from where to explore the entire Garden Route.
