9 SH Winery

Since forever I know about South Hill winery and that apparently it is a beautiful place. Last weekend I was on my way to Old Mac Daddy Farm in Elgin and I saw the sign for South Hill, just across from OMD.  I was a bit early to check in so I decided to pay South Hill a visit and maybe have lunch there. Of course I didn’t have a booking and Sunday lunch is BIG in this country so I expected them to be fully booked. But it was almost empty.  The Venue is a STUNNING place with the most amazing views and beautiful contemporary art to be admired all over the show.

I hesitantly asked if they had a high chair for Rosie as I wasn’t sure if they would be baby friendly but they were and they quickly seated me at a beautiful table, inside but with a view to the mountains outside. Rosie is such an incredible happy and content baby that everyone is always in awe about her smile so it is very easy to make friends. Lucky fish I am!!

I was super happy when they had a Risotto on the menu. I often prefer a starter and dessert and leave the main course. A 2 course meal was R180 and 3 course was R220. But when I got the bill, they only charged me R90 for starter and dessert which I thought was super reasonable. Dessert was a Dark chocolate tart with chocolate ice-cream which to me is always a winner. The service was very quick which I really liked in this case because I wasn’t sure how long Rosie was going to last.

Would love to go back there on Monday or Tuesday but they’re only open for lunch from Wednesday to Sunday which makes a lot of sense in this neck of the woods.

It really is only an hour’s drive from Cape Town so next time when you want to go to the wine lands go to the Elgin Valley. There are some stunning places and it is a LOT less crowded than Stellenbosch or Franschhoek and from what I’ve experienced at South Hill, the value for money is incredible. For R116, I enjoyed a top notch starter, dessert and delicious glass of wine. The Dutch person in me was really chuffed!
